COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Urban Studies program provides an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to analyse and address complex urban challenges. Core modules such as the Urban Studies Dissertation, Critical Issues in Urban Studies, Policy Making in Greater Manchester, Researching the City, and Global Urban Futures develop students’ understanding of urban governance, policy, social inequality, sustainability, and innovation. These modules combine theoretical frameworks with practical research, enabling students to critically evaluate urban systems and develop evidence-based solutions. Optional modules, including Place and Innovation, Qualitative and Quantitative Research Approaches, Sustainable Urban Mobilities, and From Cottonopolis to Metropolis: Manchester Communities & Institutions, allow students to tailor their learning to specific interests and gain additional skills in research methods, mobility planning, and urban history. The program leverages Manchester as a living laboratory, providing real-world insights into urban development and policy-making processes. Through a combination of project work, applied research, and interdisciplinary teaching, students develop analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities. Graduates are prepared for careers in urban research, consultancy, government, civil society, and the third sector, or for further academic study. The MSc Urban Studies equips students to contribute to the creation of inclusive, sustainable, and resilient urban environments locally, nationally, and globally.
