COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Polymer Materials Science and Engineering provides a comprehensive curriculum that combines core knowledge in polymer chemistry, physics, and engineering with hands-on research experience. Core modules such as Introduction to Materials Science and Research Methods equip students with foundational understanding of materials behaviour, experimental techniques, and analytical skills. Principles of Polymers and Composites and Control and Design of Polymerisation Reactions provide in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge of polymer synthesis, properties, and processing, while Polymer Physics and Physical Properties explores the mechanical, thermal, and structural characteristics that influence material performance. The program also includes Respect and Dignity at Manchester, supporting students’ professional development and ethical awareness. A central component of the degree is the PGT Dissertation, where students undertake an extended research project embedded within world-leading research groups, applying theoretical knowledge to experimental practice and developing advanced problem-solving and analytical skills. Optional modules, such as Advanced Composites and Soft Matter, allow students to specialise further in emerging areas of polymer science and materials engineering. Delivered in state-of-the-art facilities within the Home of Engineering and Materials and accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, the program equips graduates with the technical expertise, research experience, and professional credentials needed for careers in polymer materials research, product development, consultancy, or further doctoral study in materials science and engineering.
