COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Planning offers a comprehensive curriculum that combines theoretical understanding, practical skills, and professional experience to prepare students for careers in urban and environmental planning. Core modules include Planning Powers and Procedures, which provides knowledge of the legal and regulatory frameworks guiding planning practice, and Urban Theory, Planning Theory and Professional Ethics, which explores the philosophical and ethical dimensions of planning decisions. Land and Development focuses on strategies for effective land use and urban growth, while Digital Planning – Spatial and Policy Analysis equips students with the technical skills to analyse spatial data and evaluate planning policies. Infrastructure Planning examines the design and management of critical urban systems, ensuring students understand the integration of planning with broader societal needs. The program culminates in an MSc dissertation, allowing students to undertake independent research in a specialist area of planning. Optional modules, such as Professional Placement, Design for Healthy Places, Property Valuation, and International Urban Design, enable students to gain practical experience, develop technical expertise, and tailor their learning to individual interests. By combining academic study, practical skills, and research, the program prepares graduates to analyse complex planning challenges, develop evidence-based solutions, and contribute effectively to sustainable urban and environmental development in professional, governmental, or consultancy roles.
