COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Petroleum Geoscience offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to develop expertise in subsurface investigation and hydrocarbon resource exploration. Core modules provide students with a strong foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of geoscience. Fundamentals of Applied Subsurface Geoscience introduces key concepts and techniques for understanding geological systems, while Computational Subsurface Geoscience equips students with the skills to use advanced software for data analysis and modelling. Prospect Evaluation and Petroleum Economics focuses on assessing the viability of hydrocarbon projects and understanding economic considerations in resource development. Field-based learning is emphasised through Field Appraisal and Development, allowing students to apply knowledge in real-world settings, and Basin Analysis, which explores geological history and processes affecting resource accumulation. Key Interpretation Skills and Communication Skills modules ensure students can analyse, interpret, and present complex geological data effectively. Collaborative learning is encouraged through the Exploration Group Project, where students work together to address practical exploration challenges. The Independent Research Project provides an opportunity for in-depth, self-directed study, allowing students to contribute original research to the field.
