COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Social Anthropology program features a diverse and intellectually rich curriculum that combines theoretical study, ethnographic research, and critical analysis of contemporary social issues. Core modules such as Key Approaches in Social Anthropology and Contemporary Debates in Social Anthropology provide a solid grounding in the discipline’s central theories, methodologies, and emerging discussions. The MA Ethnography Reading Seminar and Images, Text, Fieldwork modules emphasize the development of advanced research and fieldwork skills, preparing students to conduct independent ethnographic studies. The MASA Dissertation allows students to apply these skills through original research on a topic of their choice, contributing to the broader field of anthropology. Optional modules offer the opportunity to specialize in specific areas of interest, such as Anthropology of Development and Humanitarianism, Migrants, Borders and Im/mobilities, Urban Anthropology in Britain, Anthropology of Health and Wellbeing, and Food and Eating: The Cultural Body. These options enable students to explore diverse aspects of human experience, from global migration and health practices to urban life and cultural meanings of food. The program’s blend of theoretical and applied learning equips graduates with the analytical, research, and intercultural understanding essential for careers in academia, policy, NGOs, and global development sectors.
