COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Political Economy (Standard Route) provides a comprehensive curriculum that combines core theoretical knowledge with practical and analytical skills to prepare students for careers in research, policy, consultancy, and related fields. Core modules include Theoretical Approaches to Political Economy, which introduces students to key frameworks for understanding economic, social, and political systems, and Research Design and Skills, which develops the ability to plan, conduct, and critically evaluate research. The program culminates in a Dissertation, allowing students to undertake an independent project that demonstrates mastery of research methods and analytical thinking. Optional modules give students flexibility to tailor their studies to specific interests, covering areas such as The Political Economy of Global Business, Multinationals and Comparative Employment Systems, Analysing Companies, Poverty, Inequality and Government Policy in Less Developed Countries, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Economics of Environmental Policy. These options enable students to explore applied aspects of political economy, deepen their understanding of economic policy and corporate behaviour, and examine social and environmental challenges from a political economy perspective. By combining rigorous theoretical study with practical research training and the opportunity to specialise in diverse topics, the MA prepares graduates with the skills, knowledge, and critical insight necessary to contribute effectively to professional, academic, or policy-focused roles, as well as to pursue further doctoral study.
