COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Modern Languages and Cultures offers a comprehensive and flexible program designed to develop advanced research skills and deep expertise in languages, literatures, and cultural studies. Students engage in rigorous research training through core units such as Research Training in Languages and Cultures, which equips them with the methodological and analytical skills necessary for independent study. A key component of the program is the dissertation, enabling students to undertake in-depth investigation of a topic of their choice, consolidating their research, critical thinking, and scholarly writing abilities. The program also offers units on theories and methods in modern languages, providing a strong theoretical foundation for analysing texts, contexts, and cultural phenomena. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies to specific linguistic or cultural interests, covering areas such as French culture and politics, nineteenth-century French exoticism and orientalism, modernity through the lens of major thinkers, contemporary Japanese and East Asian cultures, and advanced language study. Students have the opportunity to combine interdisciplinary approaches with specialised knowledge, enhancing their understanding of social, historical, and political contexts that shape literature and culture.
