COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA History program at the University of Manchester combines core research training with a diverse range of optional modules, enabling students to tailor their studies to specific historical interests and career goals. Mandatory units include the MA Dissertation, which allows students to undertake an in-depth, independent research project, and two sequential Historical Research units that develop advanced research skills, critical analysis, and scholarly writing. Optional modules cover a wide spectrum of historical, cultural, and interdisciplinary subjects, including American Studies with a focus on theories, methods, and practice, and explorations of race, gender, and power in the American South. Students can also choose from thematic and regional studies such as Remaking Modern British History, War, Culture and Conflict, or cross-disciplinary units like Introduction to Documentary Filmmaking in the Arts & Humanities. Additional options include language study, such as Intensive Latin, and applied research in humanitarianism and conflict response, providing practical engagement alongside academic inquiry. This structure fosters both depth and breadth of historical knowledge, supporting students in developing robust analytical and research competencies. Graduates emerge with strong expertise in historical methods and content, equipped for careers in academia, cultural heritage, public history, policy, and other roles that value high-level research, critical thinking, and contextual understanding.
