COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA History of Science, Technology and Medicine (HSTM) provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the development and societal impact of science, technology, and medicine. Core modules focus on major themes in HSTM, equipping students with analytical tools to critically examine historical developments, key debates, and transformative innovations in these fields. The program emphasizes effective communication of complex ideas, preparing students to present historical research in written and oral formats. A central component is the dissertation, which enables students to undertake substantial independent research, applying rigorous methodologies and engaging with primary and secondary sources. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies to particular interests, exploring areas such as decolonizing the history of science, the global nuclear age, risk in science and society, technology and identity, madness and society, and developments in biological science since 1800. Through this combination of core and optional studies, students develop a strong foundation in historiography, critical thinking, and research methodologies while gaining specialized knowledge in topics of contemporary relevance. Graduates leave the program well-equipped for careers in academia, public engagement, science communication, cultural heritage, policy, and research-intensive roles, with the ability to understand and interpret the historical context and societal significance of scientific, technological, and medical developments.
