COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Gender, Sexuality and Culture provides students with a comprehensive understanding of critical perspectives on gender and sexuality, combining interdisciplinary approaches from literature, cultural studies, and history. The program includes a mandatory dissertation that allows students to conduct in-depth, original research on a topic of their choice, fostering advanced analytical and critical skills. Core modules, such as Critical Thinking in Gender and Sexuality Studies, equip students with the theoretical frameworks and methodologies necessary to examine complex issues related to identity, power, and social structures. Optional modules allow for tailored study in areas such as race, gender, and power in historical contexts, including the American South from slavery to segregation, and the cultural impact of crises such as the AIDS epidemic. Students can explore literary and cinematic perspectives through modules like Queer Cinema and Beyond, Modernisms, and Postcolonial Literatures, Genres and Theories, while also investigating historical and cultural discourses on bodies and desires in the module Before ‘Sexuality’: Bodies, Desires and Discourses, 1660-1900. The program encourages critical engagement with key issues in literary and cultural theory, enabling students to apply these insights to contemporary debates. Graduates emerge with advanced research, analytical, and critical skills, preparing them for careers in academia, cultural sectors, policy, or advocacy.
