COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology degree provides an in-depth understanding of social structures, behaviours, and contemporary issues, preparing students to critically analyse society and carry out independent research. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge in social thought, culture, and research methods, while optional modules allow exploration of criminology, digital sociology, environment, inequality, global challenges, work, and interpersonal connections. This combination encourages both theoretical understanding and practical engagement with real-world social phenomena. The second year focuses on developing research skills and applying sociological theories to pressing issues, with mandatory modules in qualitative research design and survey methods, alongside optional courses exploring crime, capitalism, social networks, sustainability, global migration, social change in China, social class, and family dynamics. These modules foster analytical thinking and provide tools to investigate complex social patterns. In the third year, students can specialise further by examining topics such as drugs and society, life and death, human-animal relations, forced migration, racism in education, material culture, social inequality, social networks, power and protest, and perspectives from the Global South. This curriculum equips students with robust sociological knowledge, research skills, and critical thinking abilities, enabling them to contribute effectively to careers in social research, public policy, community development, and roles that demand insight into human and social dynamics.
