COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSocSc Social Anthropology program provides a rigorous and immersive study of human societies, cultures, and behaviors through a combination of theoretical learning, ethnographic research, and applied study. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge in visual anthropology, anthropology of art, sound, and images, cultural diversity, power and inequality, and key ideas in social anthropology, alongside regional studies and an optional introduction to business anthropology. This grounding develops critical understanding of cultural practices and social structures across global contexts. In the second year, the focus shifts to advanced anthropological theory and methodology, including the ethnographer’s craft, with optional modules exploring kinship, gender, religion, political and economic structures, materiality, representation, and digital cultures. These modules build analytical and research skills, preparing students for independent inquiry and fieldwork. The final year centers on a dissertation, allowing students to conduct original research, while optional modules explore applied and specialized areas such as development and humanitarianism, health and wellbeing, urban anthropology, migration and borders, screening culture, sensory experience, food and eating, and even extra-terrestrial anthropology. Across all years, students develop transferable skills including critical thinking, research design, qualitative analysis, and cross-cultural understanding, equipping them for careers in international development, policy, cultural consultancy, research, and further academic study.
