COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Zoology course provides a deep understanding of animal life, combining theoretical knowledge with practical and research-based learning. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in molecular biology, genetics, evolution, biodiversity, and laboratory science, gaining essential skills in scientific writing, safety, and research techniques. The second year focuses on organismal biology, animal diversity, physiology, and behaviour, along with science communication, helping students understand how animals function, interact, and adapt within ecosystems. Students can also choose from exciting field courses such as Island Biodiversity, Tropical Ecology and Conservation, or Urban Biodiversity and Conservation, providing hands-on experience studying animals in their natural environments. In the final year, students undertake an independent research or enterprise project, allowing them to specialise in their area of interest while developing key analytical and problem-solving skills. Advanced optional modules, including Post-Genome Biology, Evolution of Genes and Systems, Advanced Behavioural and Evolutionary Ecology, and Conservation Biology, allow students to explore complex biological questions. Throughout the degree, tutorials and field experiences encourage critical thinking, teamwork, and communication, preparing graduates for careers in research, conservation, education, or science communication, or for further study in zoology, ecology, or related life sciences.
