COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Speech and Language Therapy program is a structured three-year course that equips students with the knowledge and skills required to become professional speech and language therapists. In the first year, students focus on foundational knowledge, including clinical and professional practice, biomedical sciences, applied psychology and sociology, linguistics and language development, phonetics and phonology, and clinical research, alongside essential academic skills and initial practice education. This year establishes a strong theoretical and practical base for clinical work. In the second year, the curriculum advances to more specialised areas, such as acquired communication and swallowing disabilities, developmental speech and language disorders, clinical phonetics, voice and fluency, and clinical linguistics. Students also engage in research through Clinical Research 2 and build critical thinking skills, while continuing practical learning in Practice Education 2. The third year consolidates students’ clinical expertise with advanced clinical and professional practice, leadership skills, and further study of communication and swallowing disorders and developmental speech and language disorders. Clinical Research 3 and Practice Education 3 provide opportunities for evidence-based practice and real-world application. Throughout the program, students integrate theory with hands-on experience in diverse clinical settings, developing professional competence, critical thinking, and clinical reasoning. Graduates are prepared to register with the Health and Care Professions Council and pursue careers in healthcare, education, and community services, making a positive impact on individuals with communication and swallowing needs.
