COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Physics with Theoretical Physics program at Manchester provides a rigorous foundation in both classical and modern physics while emphasising theoretical approaches. In the first year, students build core knowledge through modules in mathematics, dynamics, quantum physics, relativity, vibrations and waves, electricity and magnetism, random processes in physics, and an introduction to astrophysics and cosmology. Practical laboratory skills are developed through a dedicated semester of lab work, complemented by an introduction to programming, which supports computational understanding of physical systems. The second year advances this foundation with in-depth study of quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, statistical mechanics, properties of matter, Lagrangian dynamics, and the mathematics of waves and fields, alongside laboratory work, and modules in complex variables and vector spaces that strengthen analytical and mathematical reasoning. The third year allows students to synthesise their knowledge and research skills through a BSc dissertation, a block of intensive laboratory work, and modules in electrodynamics and general physics skills. Optional interdisciplinary modules in planetary evolution, meteorology, climate, energy, and contemporary social and technological issues allow students to explore broader applications of physics. The program integrates theoretical understanding with practical and analytical expertise, preparing graduates for careers in research, advanced study, scientific analysis, or roles requiring strong quantitative and problem-solving abilities.
