COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Physics with Astrophysics program provides an in-depth study of physics while offering specialisation in astrophysics, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience. In the first year, students build a solid foundation through modules in mathematics, dynamics, quantum physics, relativity, electricity and magnetism, vibrations and waves, and laboratory work, alongside an introduction to astrophysics and cosmology and optional programming and management skills. In the second year, the focus deepens with advanced physics topics such as quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, properties of matter, statistical mechanics, and the mathematics of waves and fields, accompanied by year-long laboratory work to develop experimental and technical expertise. Astrophysics is further explored through modules on galaxies, allowing students to connect fundamental physics principles with cosmic phenomena. The third year integrates advanced astrophysical study and research, covering cosmology, astrophysical processes, stars and stellar evolution, while continuing hands-on experience in year-long laboratory work and general physics skills. Students undertake an independent BSc dissertation to develop research, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Optional modules in planetary evolution, meteorology, climate, and energy studies enable exploration of interdisciplinary applications. This combination of rigorous physics, specialised astrophysics, and practical research equips students for careers in scientific research, space science, engineering, or further postgraduate study, fostering both analytical thinking and scientific creativity.
