COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Molecular Biology program at Manchester provides a thorough foundation in the study of life at the molecular and cellular levels. In the first year, students gain an introduction to biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, and experimental laboratory techniques, alongside essential courses in genes, evolution, microbiology, writing, referencing, and health and safety. This first-year curriculum establishes core knowledge and practical laboratory skills, preparing students for more specialized study. In the second year, the program deepens understanding through modules on molecular and cellular biology, genome maintenance and regulation, proteins, the dynamic cell, cell metabolism, metabolic control, and modern ‘omic technologies. Science communication and tutorials further enhance analytical and presentation skills, with optional modules allowing further focus in molecular biology. The third year emphasizes independent research and practical application, offering projects and enterprise opportunities that develop problem-solving, data analysis, and project management skills. Optional modules enable students to explore advanced topics such as post-genome biology, protein assembly, glycobiology, macromolecular recognition, and the biochemical basis of disease, allowing for tailored specialization.
