COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Microbiology program at the University of Manchester provides a thorough grounding in the study of microorganisms and their roles in health, disease, and the environment. In the first year, students build a foundation in key biological concepts through modules in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, biodiversity, genetics, evolution, development, and microbiology, complemented by practical laboratory skills and academic tutorials. Year one also introduces students to critical skills such as scientific writing and referencing. In the second year, the curriculum focuses more specifically on microbiology, covering fundamental bacteriology, virology, parasitology, immunology, and infectious diseases, alongside organismal biology and microbiology research methods, providing students with hands-on experience and scientific communication skills. Optional modules such as genome maintenance and regulation allow students to pursue individual interests. In the third year, students engage with current topics in microbiology and have opportunities to undertake research projects, enterprise projects, or science communication projects, gaining practical and analytical experience. Advanced optional modules, including glycobiology, macromolecular recognition, post-genome biology, and advanced immunology, allow students to explore specialized areas of microbiology.
