COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Mathematics and Physics program at the University of Manchester provides a rigorous and comprehensive education across both disciplines, combining theoretical study with practical application. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in mathematics through linear algebra, mathematical foundations and analysis, vector calculus, and ordinary differential equations, while physics is explored through dynamics, quantum physics and relativity, vibrations and waves, electricity and magnetism, and laboratory work to develop experimental skills. Programming is also introduced to support computational problem-solving. In the second year, students advance in physics with courses in quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, statistical mechanics, and properties of matter, alongside continued laboratory experience, while optional mathematics modules include metric spaces, rings and fields, and groups and geometry to deepen analytical skills. The third year emphasizes advanced physics applications and professional skills, with general physics skills courses and opportunities to undertake project work, while optional mathematics modules allow further specialization in areas such as numerical analysis, fluid mechanics, complex analysis, topology, and geometry in affine space. This integrated approach ensures students develop strong quantitative, analytical, and experimental skills, preparing them for careers in research, engineering, data science, finance, and other fields that value rigorous problem-solving, interdisciplinary understanding, and applied scientific knowledge.
