COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Materials Science and Engineering program at the University of Manchester provides a comprehensive curriculum that integrates fundamental scientific principles with practical and advanced materials applications. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through courses in mathematics, physics, thermodynamics, microstructures, mechanical behaviour, and preliminary chemistry, alongside computing, crystalline structures, and functional properties. This grounding equips students with the essential knowledge and analytical skills needed for materials science. In the second year, the focus shifts to more specialised topics, including mechanics of materials, materials synthesis, sustainability, phase transformations, materials processing, deformation mechanisms, and functional behaviour. Students also engage in a design, management, and team project, with optional units in biomaterials, smart and nano materials, and engineering alloys, allowing them to explore advanced and emerging areas in the field. The third year consolidates learning with advanced study in materials characterisation, modelling and data tools, composite and advanced materials, microfabrication, functional devices, and structural integrity, complemented by a substantial team research project. Optional units such as drug delivery, polymer synthesis, and metallurgy provide further opportunities for specialisation. Across all three years, the program emphasizes both theoretical understanding and practical laboratory experience, preparing graduates for careers in research, industry, or further postgraduate study in materials science and engineering, as well as roles in innovation and technological development.
