COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc International Disaster Management and Humanitarian Response program offers a comprehensive study of disasters, humanitarian action, and conflict, combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills and applied research. In Year 1, students are introduced to the histories and key concepts of humanitarianism and disaster management, alongside essential skills in international disaster response. Optional modules allow exploration of conflict analysis, governance of aid, and global development perspectives, providing a broad understanding of the social, political, and environmental contexts in which disasters occur. Year 2 focuses on advanced topics such as everyday peacebuilding, disasters and development, emergency humanitarian assistance, and crisis management. Students can also undertake optional modules in global health, sustainable development, political economy, and urban development, or gain professional experience through practical placements. In Year 3, students consolidate their learning through research projects and advanced optional modules, including war, migration and health, diseases in developing countries, ethical decision-making under pressure, decolonising disaster studies, and practical approaches to researching disasters and conflict. Additional options explore geographical information systems, illicit economies, and development. Throughout the program, students develop critical thinking, research, and problem-solving skills, alongside practical competencies in fieldwork and humanitarian practice. Graduates are equipped for careers in international NGOs, government agencies, policy-making, humanitarian coordination, and research, contributing effectively to disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and development worldwide.
