COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Geography program offers a comprehensive and engaging curriculum that equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to understand complex geographical processes. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through core modules such as Key Concepts in Geography, Introducing Human Geographies, Environmental Processes and Change, and Dynamic Earth, alongside practical research-focused units like Researching Manchester and Tutorials in Critical Book Review. Optional modules allow students to explore areas such as Geographies of Globalisation. In the second year, the program emphasizes applied skills, with mandatory modules including Research Design and Fieldwork and Skills for Geographers, while optional modules cover specialized topics such as Economic Geography, Hydrology and Catchment Systems, Biogeography, Spatial Thinking with GIS, Transport Geographies, and urban studies focused on North American cities. The final year focuses on advanced independent research, culminating in a mandatory dissertation, and offers a range of optional modules addressing key contemporary issues such as Mediterranean Quaternary Landscapes, Geohazards, Peatlands Under Pressure, Life Course Geographies, Wildlife in the Anthropocene, and Critical Geographies of Difference. Across all three years, students develop strong analytical, fieldwork, and data-handling skills, preparing them for careers in environmental consultancy, urban planning, sustainability, research, and policy-making, while also engaging with pressing global challenges and the dynamics of both human and physical geography.
