COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Earth and Planetary Sciences program provides students with a broad understanding of Earth systems and the skills to investigate the planet’s past, present, and future. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge through core units covering the Earth’s structure, practical and professional skills, and scientific tools for observation and analysis. In the second year, students tailor their studies to a pathway aligned with their interests, choosing from Geology, Planetary Science, Geochemistry, Energy and Resources, or Palaeobiology. Each pathway builds on first-year knowledge, introducing specialized topics such as reading the rock record, understanding planetary formation, studying biogeochemical cycles, exploring resource formation and extraction, or analyzing the evolution of living systems over geological time. In the third year, students select from a wide range of units, including core and specialized pathway units, applied case studies, and interdisciplinary courses from Environmental Sciences or the College for Interdisciplinary Learning. A key feature of the final year is a research project, allowing students to design and conduct investigations in the field or laboratory to address a scientific question of their choice. The program combines theoretical learning, practical skills, and research experience, equipping graduates for careers in environmental consultancy, resource management, energy, research, and related scientific fields.
