COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1 of the BSc Dental Hygiene and Therapy course, students gain foundational knowledge and practical skills essential for managing patients in a clinical setting. This includes the study of basic sciences, understanding human diseases, and learning general dentistry principles. Students also explore behavioural sciences to support effective patient communication and interaction. Alongside theoretical learning, they develop fundamental clinical skills and gain initial patient contact experience, establishing a strong base for future clinical practice. In Year 2, the focus shifts to building on these clinical skills, with particular emphasis on dental radiography and restorative dentistry. Students refine their technical abilities, learn to interpret dental images accurately, and apply restorative techniques in a supervised clinical environment, further enhancing their confidence and competence. By Year 3, students integrate the clinical skills acquired in previous years to manage more complex treatment plans, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application to provide comprehensive care. Additionally, students undertake a critically appraised topic, developing their ability to evaluate research, engage with evidence-based practice, and make informed clinical decisions. Across all three years, the course emphasizes the development of professional, ethical, and technical skills, ensuring graduates are fully prepared for registration with the General Dental Council and a successful career as dental hygienists and therapists.
