COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Biotechnology program combines scientific knowledge, practical laboratory skills, and business insight to prepare students for careers in the life sciences sector. In the first year, students build a foundation in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, and experimental techniques, while gaining essential skills in laboratory practice, scientific communication, and enterprise. This initial stage also introduces students to exploring enterprise and developing innovative thinking. In the second year, the curriculum deepens with advanced molecular and cellular biology, genome maintenance, ‘omic’ technologies, bacteriology, plant biotechnology, and science communication, alongside tools and techniques for enterprise, providing a balance of technical expertise and practical application. Optional modules allow students to expand their knowledge in microbiology and biochemistry. The final year emphasizes the application of acquired knowledge through specialized modules in post-genome biology, green biotechnology, and advanced biotechnology problem-solving and essay papers, supported by research projects. Opportunities to undertake enterprise and science communication projects, as well as engagement with current topics in microbiology, give students hands-on experience and exposure to real-world challenges. Across the degree, students gain an understanding of the ethical, social, and commercial dimensions of biotechnology, equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and practical experience necessary for careers in research and development, industrial biotechnology, or further postgraduate study.
