COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Biology with Science & Society program offers a distinctive interdisciplinary approach, combining core biological sciences with humanities perspectives to explore the social, historical, and ethical dimensions of science. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in biology through modules such as genes, evolution and development, introduction to laboratory science, biochemistry, and microbes, humankind and the environment, while also studying the history of science, medicine, and modern scientific developments. Year two expands understanding through topics including science communication, environmental history, the global history of epidemics, and optional field courses in biodiversity and ecology, allowing students to experience practical scientific work in diverse ecosystems. The program emphasizes critical thinking and analytical skills, enabling students to engage with contemporary scientific debates in societal, cultural, and ethical contexts. In the final year, students undertake independent projects and optional advanced modules, covering topics such as forensic science history, climate change, nuclear threats, and mental health in society, fostering research, project management, and communication skills. Opportunities for applied learning include science communication projects, life sciences enterprise projects, and research in the history of science, technology, and medicine. Graduates develop a unique skill set combining technical scientific expertise with the ability to analyze and communicate the broader societal implications of science, preparing them for careers in research, policy, education, and communication.
