COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Biochemistry program provides a structured and comprehensive study of the molecular and cellular foundations of life, equipping students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for careers in science, research, and healthcare. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, and chemistry, while developing essential laboratory skills, academic writing, and health and safety knowledge. Year one emphasizes understanding the relationships between molecules and cells, alongside the principles of experimental biology. In the second year, students advance to molecular and cellular biology, genome maintenance, protein structure and function, cell metabolism, and membrane biology. Core skills in science communication and the chemistry of biomolecules are integrated, with optional modules allowing exploration of specialised topics such as cellular biochemistry. The third year provides opportunities for independent research and project work, including enterprise and science communication projects, alongside advanced study in post-genome biology, protein assembly, glycobiology, and the biochemical basis of disease. This combination of rigorous scientific teaching, hands-on laboratory experience, and research-led projects ensures that graduates are well-prepared for employment in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare, as well as for further study at master’s or doctoral level. The course cultivates analytical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to communicate complex scientific concepts effectively.
