COURSE CURRICULUM

The BNurs Mental Health Nursing program at the University of Manchester offers a rigorous and practice-focused curriculum designed to prepare students for professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). In the first year, students build a strong foundation in public health, anatomy, physiology, and evidence-based practice, alongside developing collaborative care planning skills and values-based nursing. Practical experience is integral from the outset, with simulated and real-world clinical placements providing exposure to diverse patient populations and care settings. In the second year, the curriculum expands to applied biosciences, advanced nursing knowledge, and skills, with students engaging in multiple clinical placements to deepen practical experience. Optional units such as mental health in children and young people, dementia care, critical and intensive care, tissue viability, and palliative care allow students to explore specialist areas of practice. The final year focuses on leadership, research, and facilitation of learning in nursing practice, alongside continued clinical placements that consolidate practical competence. Students also develop skills in clinical inquiry and evidence-based decision-making. Optional modules explore the social and political contexts of health and social care, preparing graduates to be informed, compassionate, and adaptable practitioners capable of providing high-quality mental health nursing across a range of clinical environments and contributing to leadership, policy, and research in the field.
