COURSE CURRICULUM

The BASS Sociology and Philosophy program combines sociological study with philosophical inquiry, offering students a comprehensive understanding of how societies are structured and the ethical, moral, and theoretical frameworks that underpin social life. In the first year, students gain foundational skills through modules in critical thinking, social research, and criminology, alongside optional courses in criminal justice, psychology, economics, and crime analysis. These provide a strong base in both empirical and theoretical approaches to understanding social behaviour. The second year broadens these skills through optional modules that include policing, criminology, data analysis, philosophy of religion, applied philosophy, philosophy of race, and formal logic, allowing students to deepen their analytical and ethical reasoning capabilities. In the third year, students engage with advanced optional topics such as drugs and society, comparative criminology, journeys out of offending, victims and justice, organised crime, mass violence, youth crime, white-collar crime, crime mapping, and the study of criminal psychopaths. These modules encourage students to integrate sociological insight with philosophical perspectives, preparing them for independent research, including dissertations and extended projects. The program fosters critical thinking, research skills, and ethical awareness, equipping graduates for careers in research, policy, social justice, law, or further study in philosophy, sociology, or criminology, while providing opportunities for global and professional experience.
