COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology and Criminology degree provides students with a thorough understanding of social structures, human behaviour, and the causes and consequences of crime. In the first year, students engage with social research, study crime and society, and have the option to explore criminological research methods, foundations of criminal justice, psychology, data analysis, development studies, economics, and criminal law. These modules equip students with critical thinking and research skills while introducing them to the social contexts in which crime occurs. The second year builds on this foundation by examining policing, crime and deviance, punishment, and criminology in action, alongside opportunities to study philosophical topics including religion, applied philosophy, race, and logic. Students also develop quantitative and analytical skills through data modelling and research-focused modules. In the final year, students can specialise in areas such as drugs and society, comparative criminology, journeys out of offending, victims and justice, organised and mass crime, youth crime, and white-collar crime, with the option to complete either a long or short dissertation. Across the three years, the course combines theoretical understanding with practical research skills, preparing graduates for careers in criminal justice, social research, policy development, and other fields that require analytical, ethical, and interdisciplinary insight into crime and society.
