COURSE CURRICULUM

The BASS Social Anthropology and Data Analytics program provides students with a comprehensive understanding of societies and cultures worldwide while equipping them with practical skills in data analysis and social research. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in social anthropology through key concepts and ethnographic methods, and engage with social research while learning to measure inequalities and apply statistical techniques to social science questions. Optional modules allow exploration of criminology, psychology, and criminal justice. In the second year, students advance their analytical skills with survey design, data modelling, and further statistical methods, while optional criminology modules explore policing, crime, deviance, and punishment, complemented by philosophical studies on religion, ethics, and race. In the final year, students focus on using statistical models to answer social research questions, integrating anthropological perspectives with quantitative approaches. Optional modules provide opportunities to study crime mapping, organised and white-collar crime, youth offending, and criminology in action. Across three years, the program emphasizes both qualitative and quantitative research, combining theory and practical skills to prepare students for careers in social research, policy analysis, international development, and criminal justice, fostering a unique ability to interpret and act on social data in a global context.
