COURSE CURRICULUM

The Politics and Criminology degree provides a comprehensive understanding of political systems, crime, and social justice, combining theoretical and practical approaches. In the first year, students build a foundation in social research and criminology, engaging with modules on crime and society, criminal justice, psychology, and criminological research methods. Optional modules in development studies, economics, and criminal law allow students to contextualise crime within wider societal and political frameworks. The second year deepens this knowledge, focusing on policing, crime and deviance, modelling criminological data, and understanding punishment, alongside philosophy modules that explore ethics, religion, and logic. This year emphasizes the application of research methods and data analysis to understand complex social issues and criminal behaviour. In the final year, students explore advanced topics such as organised crime, youth justice, white-collar crime, drugs and society, and criminology of mass violence. Modules on crime mapping and criminal psychology provide practical skills in data analysis and investigation, while the opportunity for independent research fosters critical thinking and analytical competence. Throughout the course, students develop transferable skills in research, reasoning, and communication, equipping them to critically evaluate crime and justice systems and pursue careers in law enforcement, policy, public service, or further study in criminology, politics, or related disciplines.
