COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Social Sciences Philosophy and Criminology program combines rigorous philosophical inquiry with the study of crime, justice, and societal responses. In the first year, students develop foundational skills in critical thinking, social research, and criminology, exploring the nature of crime and criminal justice systems, the psychology of offending, and methods for analysing criminological data. Optional modules in economics and development studies provide a broader social science context. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of crime and justice through modules on policing, crime and deviance, punishment, and criminology in action, while continuing to build analytical and data-handling skills. Philosophy modules in areas such as applied philosophy, formal logic, and the philosophy of race and religion encourage critical reflection on ethical, moral, and social issues. The third year allows for specialization and independent research, with options covering drugs and society, comparative criminology, mass violence, youth justice, organised crime, and corporate crime. Students also undertake short or long dissertations, applying philosophical and criminological frameworks to real-world topics. The program equips graduates with analytical, ethical, and research skills, fostering the ability to critically evaluate complex social issues, debate challenging questions, and pursue careers in criminal justice, policy, research, law, and related fields that demand ethical awareness and social insight.
