COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Arabic and Spanish program provides an integrated approach to mastering two languages while gaining in-depth knowledge of the cultures, histories, and societies of Arabic and Spanish-speaking regions. In the first year, students establish a strong foundation with mandatory modules including History and Politics of the Middle East and North Africa, Arabic Language 1 and 2, and Cultures of the Hispanic World, while optional modules offer opportunities to explore the History and Sociopolitics of Palestine/Israel, Introduction to Islam, Cultural Anthropology of the Middle East and North Africa, Spanish and Latin American Studies, and Spanish Language 1. In the second year, students continue developing advanced Arabic skills through Arabic Language 3 and 4 and engage with optional modules covering postcolonial Arab literature, Arab and Jewish nationalisms, gender politics, modern Islamic thought, as well as Spanish and Latin American topics including visual culture, literature, history, and linguistics. The final year consolidates language learning with Media and Business Arabic, Arabic Language 5, and Spanish Language 6, alongside optional modules such as professional translation, interpreting, contemporary debates in Islam, Arabic literature, North African studies, and Latin American culture and environment. A dissertation in Modern Languages and Cultures allows independent research. Throughout the course, students develop linguistic proficiency, cultural understanding, and analytical skills, preparing them for careers in translation, international relations, diplomacy, media, global business, or further postgraduate study.
