COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Religions, Theology and Ethics degree provides a comprehensive and flexible study of religious traditions, theological inquiry, and ethical reflection. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge through core units such as the Introduction to the Study of Religions and Theology, while optional units allow exploration of specific areas including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, ethics, and the environment. The program encourages engagement with historical, cultural, and philosophical perspectives, examining texts, beliefs, and practices across different religions. In the second year, students can deepen their understanding by selecting from options such as World Christianities, Biblical Hebrew, New Testament Greek, religion and gender studies, and modern Islamic thought. This stage allows students to integrate analytical and interpretative skills with cultural and historical insights, fostering a nuanced understanding of religion and ethics in society. The final year emphasizes independent research and critical thinking, with a mandatory dissertation complemented by optional units like Holocaust Theology and Ethics, Science and Islam, Gender and Sexuality in the Bible, and interdisciplinary studies linking literature, theology, and ethics. Throughout the course, students develop the ability to analyze complex religious and ethical issues, communicate ideas effectively, and undertake rigorous research, preparing them for careers in education, policy, international development, or further academic study in theology, philosophy, and related disciplines.
