COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Modern History with Economics program integrates historical study with economic analysis, enabling students to understand how economic and political forces have shaped societies over time. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in microeconomics and macroeconomics alongside core historical modules, including capitalism in historical perspective and the practice of history, while optional modules allow exploration of finance, business economics, accounting, and data history. The second year deepens both historical and economic understanding, with a mandatory independent research project that develops research, analytical, and critical thinking skills. Students can further study areas such as the American Civil War, African-American history, corporate finance, marketing, and financial markets, allowing them to examine historical events through an economic lens and apply theoretical knowledge to practical business contexts. In the final year, students complete a history dissertation, synthesizing their research and analytical abilities, while optional modules cover advanced topics in microeconomics and macroeconomics, investment economics, marketing, management of knowledge, and historical case studies such as slavery and the Roman army. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary skills, including quantitative analysis, critical evaluation, and effective communication, preparing graduates for careers in finance, policy, research, international organisations, and education, while providing a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between historical developments and economic systems.
