COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Middle Eastern Studies program at the University of Manchester provides a comprehensive exploration of the history, politics, cultures, and languages of the Middle East and North Africa. In the first year, students study the history and sociopolitics of Palestine and Israel from 1882 to 1967, cultural anthropology of the region, and the broader history and politics of the Middle East and North Africa. Optional modules include an introduction to Islam and beginner courses in Arabic or Turkish, allowing students to begin developing language skills alongside cultural knowledge. The second year builds on this foundation with mandatory modules such as themes in Arab and Jewish nationalisms, the politics of women and gender in the region, and the history of modern Islamic thought. Optional modules in literature and language continue to develop linguistic and cultural competence, including postcolonial Arab world literature and beginner Arabic or Turkish courses. In the third year, students undertake a dissertation in modern languages and cultures, consolidating research and analytical skills. Additional modules explore contemporary debates in Islam, reading contemporary Arabic literature in English translation, and understanding the histories, cultures, and societies of the Maghreb. The degree integrates historical, political, literary, and linguistic study, equipping graduates with critical thinking, research, and intercultural skills, preparing them for careers in academia, diplomacy, international organizations, and media.
