COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Linguistics and Sociology program provides a comprehensive exploration of language and its social dimensions, combining linguistic theory with sociological perspectives. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge of language structure, including word and sentence formation, the sounds of language, and the study of meaning, while optional modules introduce the history and varieties of English, language in context, and sociological perspectives on society and inequalities. This grounding enables students to understand how language reflects and shapes social life. In the second year, students deepen their linguistic expertise through modules in phonology, grammar analysis, typology, semantics, pragmatics, and societal multilingualism, while also gaining skills in quantitative methods for language research. This year emphasizes applying analytical techniques to real linguistic data and understanding language in interactional and social contexts. In the final year, students have opportunities to specialize in areas such as variationist sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, stylistics, and the evolution of the English language, allowing for a detailed study of language variation, cognition, and social usage. Across all three years, the program develops research, analytical, and critical thinking skills, culminating in a capstone project or dissertation that integrates linguistic and sociological insights. Graduates are prepared for careers in research, education, communication, policy, and other fields requiring expertise in language and society.
