COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA History program offers a broad and flexible study of historical periods, societies, and cultures across different eras and regions. In Year 1, students gain foundational skills through the core module History in Practice, while choosing from a wide range of optional topics such as ancient Greece and Rome, pharaonic Egypt, modern China, and American history, enabling them to explore diverse civilizations and themes. Year 2 builds on these foundations with training in independent research and deeper thematic or regional studies. Students can examine subjects such as the American Civil War, classical Greek politics, Roman society, European intellectual history, or 20th-century British and German culture, fostering analytical and interpretive abilities. In the final year, students complete a History Dissertation, conducting original research under expert supervision. Optional modules allow further specialization in areas like the Holocaust, fascism in Europe, Indian nationalism, empire and globalisation, slavery, and the Roman frontiers. Throughout the degree, students develop strong research, writing, and critical thinking skills while engaging with multiple historical perspectives. This combination of methodological training, diverse content, and independent study equips graduates for careers in research, education, heritage, journalism, and public service, or for further academic study.
