COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA History of Art program provides students with a deep and wide-ranging understanding of art, architecture, and visual culture across historical periods and global contexts. In Year 1, students are introduced to key art movements and critical approaches through core modules such as Art Spaces, Art History Tutorials, and survey courses like Ice Age to Baroque and Rococo to Now. These modules build foundational skills in visual analysis, interpretation, and research, while optional courses like Introduction to World Cinema expand engagement with visual media. Year 2 develops theoretical and contextual knowledge through core modules such as Art in Theory and a European Art History Fieldtrip, offering practical exposure to artworks and cultural heritage sites. Students can choose from diverse optional modules covering topics like British art and the environment, Renaissance and Baroque architecture, digital visual culture, and modern Indian art. In the final year, students complete a History of Art Dissertation, conducting independent research on a topic of their choice, supported by optional modules that explore specialized areas such as Victorian art, digital art, ecology and technology, or the art of Picasso. This structured combination of theory, practice, and research prepares graduates for careers in museums, galleries, academia, media, and the creative industries.
