COURSE CURRICULUM

The History and Sociology program provides students with a comprehensive understanding of human societies, combining historical study with sociological analysis. In the first year, students are introduced to core historical methods through modules such as History in Practice and gain foundational sociological research skills in Researching Culture and Society. Optional modules allow exploration of diverse historical periods and cultures, from ancient Greece and Rome to Pharaonic Egypt, as well as thematic studies such as the American Century and digital culture. In the second year, students develop more specialised knowledge and research skills, undertaking an Independent Research Project while exploring a wide range of topics including African-American history, classical civilizations, European intellectual history, Weimar culture, and political and social change in Britain. The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking and the ability to contextualize social phenomena within historical frameworks. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through a History Dissertation and optional modules focusing on global and comparative histories, including slavery in the American South, the Roman military, modern India, British economic and social history, the Holocaust, fascist Europe, and U.S. foreign policy in the 1960s. This combination of historical breadth and sociological perspective equips graduates with analytical, research, and interpretive skills applicable in careers such as education, public policy, research, and cultural heritage management.
