COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Geography program at the University of Manchester offers a comprehensive study of both human and physical geography, combining theoretical understanding with practical skills. In the first year, students explore key geographical concepts, environmental processes, and human geographies while engaging in research activities such as studying Manchester as a case study. Tutorials and critical book reviews support the development of academic skills, while optional modules like Geographies of Globalisation allow students to tailor their studies. In the second year, the focus shifts to research design, fieldwork, and applied skills for geographers, with opportunities to study specialized topics such as economic geography, hydrology, glaciers, sustainability, GIS, transport, biogeography, and urban development. This structure ensures students gain both methodological expertise and contextual knowledge. In the third year, students complete a dissertation that synthesizes their research skills and understanding, while optional modules explore Mediterranean Quaternary landscapes, geohazards, peatlands, wildlife in the Anthropocene, urban transformation, and critical perspectives on social difference and geographical controversies.
