COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Film Studies and History program offers an integrated study of cinema and historical analysis, providing students with the opportunity to explore film in a broad cultural and temporal context. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in film, including the art and history of cinema, alongside historical methods and global perspectives. Optional modules allow for an introduction to classical history, American history, and ancient civilizations, enabling students to connect cinematic study with historical inquiry. In the second year, the focus broadens to include screen culture, contemporary British cinema, and specialized historical topics such as African-American history, the American Civil War, and classical Greek and Roman societies. Students gain the ability to analyze film in relation to social, cultural, and political contexts, linking theory with historical understanding. The third year emphasizes advanced study and research, offering options in documentary, docufiction, and cinema studies alongside historical investigations into slavery, the Roman army, and other global historical phenomena. Students also undertake dissertations and extended projects, synthesizing knowledge from film and history to develop critical, analytical, and research skills. Graduates leave with a well-rounded understanding of both disciplines, prepared for careers in the media, cultural heritage, education, and research sectors, or for further study in film and historical studies.
