COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Film Studies and English Literature program offers a comprehensive exploration of film and literary studies, integrating cinematic analysis with the study of English literature. In the first year, students gain a foundational understanding of film through courses such as The Art of Film and Introduction to Early Film Histories, while also developing literary knowledge with Reading Literature and optional units exploring medieval texts and literary theory. In the second year, the program deepens students’ analytical skills with mandatory units like Screen, Culture and Society, alongside a variety of optional courses covering contemporary British cinema, documentary filmmaking, horror film, screenwriting, and creative writing in fiction. This allows students to tailor their studies according to their specific interests in film or literature. The third year focuses on advanced interdisciplinary study, with optional modules addressing American cultural and cinematic themes, including Love American Style, Climate Change and Culture Wars, American Hauntings, and James Baldwin in Context, alongside practical filmmaking experience through projects such as Docufiction Filmmaking. The program culminates in a dissertation in Drama or Film, enabling students to undertake independent research that combines theoretical and practical approaches. Graduates leave equipped with critical, analytical, and creative skills applicable to careers in film, media, cultural industries, and literary fields, prepared for professional and academic advancement.
