COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Film Studies and English Language program offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary exploration of cinema and linguistics, equipping students with both analytical and practical skills. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through core modules in film studies, including the Art of Film and Introduction to Early Film Histories, alongside modules in English language such as English Word and Sentence Structure, The Sounds of Language, and History and Varieties of English. Optional modules allow further exploration of language, mind, and meaning, enhancing understanding of linguistic principles. In the second year, students expand their cinematic knowledge with courses such as Screen, Culture and Society, Contemporary British Cinema, and optional modules in documentary, horror, and screenwriting, as well as specialized topics like media and digital culture or the depiction of prisons on stage and screen. The third year emphasizes independent research and practical application, offering options such as a dissertation, docufiction filmmaking, Queer Bodies and the Cinema, social lives of cinema, and adaptations of fantastic texts, alongside global television studies and contemporary documentary production. Across all years, students develop critical thinking, creativity, and analytical skills, learning to connect linguistic insight with film analysis. This interdisciplinary approach prepares graduates for careers in film, media, and communication, with a strong foundation in English language understanding.
