COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Film Studies and East Asian Studies program offers students a comprehensive and interdisciplinary education, combining cinematic analysis with an in-depth exploration of East Asian cultures, languages, histories, and societies. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules in Chinese and Japanese studies, introduction to world cinema, and early film histories, alongside courses on visual cultures in China and East Asia, enabling them to understand both regional and global contexts. The second year develops critical and creative skills with film-focused modules such as screen, culture and society, contemporary British cinema, documentary film practice, horror, and screenwriting, while optional modules in Chinese language and cultural studies allow students to deepen regional expertise. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through advanced and specialized courses, including religions in China, socialism in China, business Chinese, and a range of film-focused options such as queer bodies and cinema, docufiction filmmaking, the social lives of cinema, and documentary to mockumentary studies. The program also emphasizes independent research through dissertations in both Drama/Film and East Asian Studies, allowing students to pursue individual interests. By integrating film studies with East Asian scholarship, the course equips graduates with analytical, linguistic, cultural, and creative skills, preparing them for careers in media, international relations, cultural consultancy, or further academic research.
