COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA English Literature program provides a broad and in-depth study of English writing across historical periods, beginning with foundational courses in the first year that cover reading literature, mapping the medieval, theory and text, literature and history, and tutorials in English literature. These courses establish a strong understanding of literary analysis, historical context, and critical theory. In the second year, students can choose from a diverse range of optional units, including American literature and social criticism, Chaucer, Shakespeare, creative writing in fiction and poetry, gender and sexuality studies, and explorations of writing, identity, and nation. These options allow students to develop specialized interests while continuing to build analytical and interpretive skills. The third year offers further opportunities for focused study with units such as Love American Style, Occupy Everything, Climate Change and Culture Wars, American Hauntings, James Baldwin in Context, Novel Democracy, and long essays, alongside advanced creative writing options. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to critically engage with texts in their social, historical, and cultural contexts while honing their writing and research skills. Graduates emerge with a deep understanding of literature’s cultural significance, ready for careers in writing, publishing, media, education, or further postgraduate study in literary fields.
