COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA English Literature with Creative Writing program offers an integrated approach to the study of literature and the practice of creative writing. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules that explore English literature across historical periods, including medieval, Renaissance, and modern texts, alongside developing creative writing skills through dedicated workshops and tutorials. The curriculum emphasizes critical analysis, close reading, and an understanding of literary theory while fostering practical skills in fiction and poetry writing. In the second year, students deepen their engagement with creative writing, studying fiction and poetry in greater depth, while also having the option to explore American literature, Chaucer, Shakespeare, and themes such as gender, sexuality, identity, and nationhood. This combination of literary study and creative practice allows students to develop both analytical and imaginative skills. In the final year, students have the opportunity to focus on specialized topics in literature, American cultural studies, and contemporary issues such as climate change, cultural conflict, and social activism, while continuing to refine their creative work through advanced fiction and poetry modules and long essay projects. Based in Manchester, a UNESCO City of Literature, the program connects students to a vibrant literary community, equipping them with skills for careers in writing, publishing, media, education, and further study in literature or creative writing.
