COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA English Literature and History program provides an interdisciplinary study combining literary and historical perspectives to develop a comprehensive understanding of culture, society, and politics across time. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through core modules in literature and history, alongside tutorials and optional courses exploring topics from American history and literature to classical civilizations, including Greek, Roman, and Egyptian studies. This year emphasizes critical thinking, analytical skills, and an introduction to research methods. In the second year, students expand their knowledge with options in American literature, classical history, and creative writing, while exploring themes such as the Roman Empire, classical politics, and the lives of historical figures, encouraging connections between historical events and literary expression. In the final year, students can further specialize by choosing advanced modules in contemporary American literature, creative writing, climate and culture studies, and classical history, such as the Roman army and frontier societies. The course also includes opportunities for independent research and long essays, enabling students to pursue individual academic interests in depth. Situated in Manchester, a UNESCO City of Literature, the program offers access to rich cultural and archival resources, supporting both academic and personal development. Graduates gain strong analytical, research, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in writing, teaching, cultural heritage, and related fields.
