COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA English Literature and American Studies program offers an interdisciplinary approach to understanding both English and American literatures and cultures. In the first year, students build a solid foundation in American literature up to 1900, twentieth-century American literature, and broader American Studies, alongside core English literature courses such as reading literature and literary theory. Optional units allow exploration of American political, social, and historical contexts. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge through courses in American cultural studies, film studies, and historical perspectives, including African-American history and the American Civil War, while also having the option to study creative writing and English literature modules. The third year emphasizes independent research and specialized topics, with optional units covering contemporary cultural issues, social activism, climate and culture, and significant literary and historical figures such as James Baldwin. Students can also undertake long essays and in-depth research projects to refine their analytical and critical skills. The program leverages Manchester’s status as a UNESCO City of Literature, providing access to rich literary resources and cultural experiences. Graduates emerge with strong research, writing, and analytical skills, equipped for careers in media, publishing, education, cultural management, and further study in literature and American Studies.
